This lively new translation of Chrétien's romances includes that of Perceval, the first Grail story. Together they offer the most complete expression we possess from a single author of the ideals of French chivalry.
We know virtually nothing of Chrétien's life. He may have been a native of Troyes, where he found patronage in the person of the Countess Marie of Champagne, for whom he composed at least his Lancelot, probably in the 1170s. His last work, however, the unfinished Perceval, was dedicated to Count Philip of Flanders; so it is possible that he left Troyes before he did, perhaps in the 1180s. Chrétien is regarded as the father of the Arthurian romance, since although he did not invent the 'Matter of Britain', he gave it in his verse a sophisticated literary from, thereby establishing the Arthurian legend as a major branch of European literature and assuring its survival into modern times. In addition to his introduction, Professor Owen has provided a select bibliography, a glossary, and notes on the text designed to assist the general reader as well as the student. |
