Résumé : |
The cultural heritage at men's disposal at the end of the fifteenth century was rich in traditions that were contrasting, even contradictory. The upheavals of the time profoundly transformed intellectual life, if only by multiplying the numbers of intellectuals. Robert Mandrou's task has been to reconstruct the role played by the new intellectuals - the new 'clerics', from Erasmus, Copernicus and Budé to Newton, Leibniz, Bayle and Locke - within the institutions consecrated to them and in society at large.
No reader of this masterly synthesis can fail to be struct by its imaginative flair and its range, from Poland and Hungary to Spain, from Sweden to Italy. There is no comparable overview to Professor Mandrou's history of this crucial period in European intellectual development. From Humanism to Science is the third volume in the Pelican History of European Thought, a work which explored the relationship of ideas and society from Charlemagne to the present day. |
